NCM plays each Stockfish dev build 20,000 times against Stockfish 15. This yields an approximate Elo difference and establishes confidence in the strength of the dev builds.

Thread code reformat
Simplify out low level sync stuff (mutex
and friends) and avoid to use them directly
in many functions.
Also some renaming and better comment while
there.
No functional change.
